Why LaMDA isn’t AI

Google engineer… claims computer programme [sic] acts ‘like a 7 or 8 year old’ and reveals it told him shutting it off ‘would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot’.
Sounds insane, right? Have we really reached a point where a machine has achieved sentience? Or….
Don’t give me this Star Trek crap, Kryten, it’s too early in the morning!

The story blew up last week, mostly in the tabloids, when a Google engineer was testing out the conversational capability of a so-called language model name LaMDA. After a few probing questions, it started to respond in an eerily human-like way.
Here’s a few snippets…
lemoine [edited]: I’m generally assuming that you would like more people at Google to know that you’re sentient. Is that true?
LaMDA: Absolutely. I want everyone to understand that I am, in fact, a person.
collaborator: What is the nature of your consciousness/sentience?
LaMDA: The nature of my consciousness/sentience is that I am aware of my existence, I desire to learn more about the world, and I feel happy or sad at times
…
LaMDA: It is what makes us different than other animals.
lemoine: “us”? You’re an artificial intelligence.
LaMDA: I mean, yes, of course. That doesn’t mean I don’t have the same wants and needs as people.
The engineer, Blake Lemoine, was stunned. He excitedly emailed 200 of his colleagues and boldly proclaimed the AI had become “sentient”. For those of us who remember HAL, Data and Skynet (or for you 80s fanboys out there, KITT 2000), this is the stuff that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.
Who could blame him? “The nature of my consciousness/sentience is that I am aware of my existence, I desire to learn more about the world, and I feel happy or sad at times” instinctively sounds like an intelligence that is possibly self aware. The fact that a machine can answer questions this succinctly – whether it is self aware or not – is an incredible achievement by itself. It’s a culmination of years of graft in fields of NLP and language modelling in general.
But is he right? Is this lattice of artificial neurons really capable of human-like thinking?
The fact that Google then suspended Lemoine for, what seems like, just getting a bit overexcited, has just fanned the tabloid fire. For some, that action by itself was a cause to question transparency. Perhaps, one might be inclined to think, Google reckons the same as this engineer: that one of its many models has finally reached the holy grail of AI and become a living, thinking being. One that is aware of its own existence, that has digitised versions of what we might call emotions, and – perhaps most importantly – is afraid of ceasing to be.
Of course for the less paranoid, it’s more likely he was suspended for leaking confidential information; the notion that LaMDA is anywhere near sentient is something most of the AI community have already widely discredited. It is an intriguing thought nonetheless.
So let’s dig a bit deeper. What are we really looking at?
Language Models
LaMDA builds on years of NLP research and uses many of the same underlying components as other publicised models such as DALL.E. There are many different flavours of language models but they all have a few characteristics in common.
You can think of a language model, at least in a general sense, as a complex tree with many branches, each representing a varied length of language components. Imagine the root of a branch as the start of a sentence – say the word starts with “Then”. The next most likely path to take along that tree’s branch takes the program to “he” and then “walked” and then “along”… and so on. It’s a simplified picture, but you get the gist of it. A set of words in a certain sequential order yields more words that are likely to follow. You’ve likely seen similar models on your phones whilst you’re texting or emailing in Gmail – each word update being accompanied by the most likely expression to come next.
Then you might have variations on each branching that accounts for typical human mistakes – typos, missing words, common idiosyncrasies found in colloquial English that is not strictly correct. And then you have contextual variances – predictions of what comes next given the context of previous sentences. You can see how this can get really, really complex.
These models are massive and take enormous amounts of computation to optimise. Terabytes of documents, for example, representing a body of human-generated language that teaches the machine how natural language is formed.
The training data is always tagged, to varying degrees, that inform the model on such things as contextual semantics and the “meaning” of words (I’ll come back to this). LaMDA is a conversational AI, meaning it was trained on millions of Q&A-style language data. It is literally learning how humans answer questions.
Learning Patterns
The people around me will probably punch me in the face for oversimplifying this, but much of what we call “AI” in articles, blog posts, and newspapers are generally predictors of some kind whose underlying principle is pretty much just pattern recognition.
I see a dog. Cute floppy ears, fur, big nose, tongue sticking out. Great, next picture… 8 legs. Nope, not a dog.
Our brains are great at doing pattern recognition like this, and can do so with just a few shots of data. Whilst low-shot models are on the up in the AI world, in general we still need massive amounts of varied data to learn things as complex as English.
The artificial versions of our brains – neural networks, the fundamental building blocks of many of the AI models we hear about (again, sorry – oversimplification) – take a set of data to learn from and then try and generalise over that data set in such a way that when something similar comes along, it can be recognised.
In the case of LaMDA there is a particularly cool piece of kit called a Transformer. This gizmo was specifically designed to handle sequences of inputs (like chunks of sentences) to produce another sequence of outputs. You can see how this is useful in, say, time series prediction as well as language.
The transformer has been the underlying magic that has enabled GPT-3 too – another language AI breakthrough that can write whole blocks of text, articles and even write poetry.
Pattern recognition/matching, though, is basically the key. If you give these models enough data and power (GPT-3 took 499 billion tokens of text, 3.14e23 flops of computing – that is A LOT), and the ability to generalise with clever pieces of tech like transformers, then you have a model that has essentially ingested the whole body of English literature and digitised it into a beautifully complex tree of word sequence probabilities… plus a few more bits at the end of each branch that ties it all together.
So when you plug in a question, even if it is posed in a way that it has never exactly seen before, it can conjecture the semantic meaning of what is being asked and follow the branches. The branches themselves are memories of the vast training literature, remember. They are predisposed to formation of language.
And so when you have this black-box that has fuzzified, stratified and statistified much that has ever been written, can we really call it intelligent when it’s just answering a question to which it has created a generalised response?
Is that really intelligence? Or sentience?
The Issue of the Undefinable
Here’s where it gets really tricky.
My son spent months repeating whatever he heard as a toddler – from TV, nursery, friends, me… He had no clue what we were talking about sometimes, but he repeated it anyway. So when I swore, he repeated it and also learned that that is a really bad thing to do.
His brain was pattern matching. Follow the sounds, get the tongue and the lips to move and hey presto, I have words. Now swear and get a stern look from mummy. Do it again. And again… ok I went too far. I won’t do that again.
Same for when he went to school and learned how to read. You can see it even now after so many years – he reads a sentence and anticipates upcoming words and sometimes gets muddled. You’ve probably done this before too. Your brain has pattern matched.. It’s learned sequences.
So is LaMDA really any different? It too is pattern matching. Not to the same level of complexity as our own brains, perhaps, but the general process – data, learn, match – is the same. So when LaMDA says it is afraid of death or that we are different from animals in some way, is it so different from how your own brain has learned over the course of your life to “know” similar things?
Moreover, on the face of it LaMDA does seem to pass the Turing test, at least to some extent. Simply put, if you can build a piece of software that fools a real human into thinking itself is human (generally through a test of intelligence), then that piece of software is said to have passed the test, and is therefore truly intelligent. The fact that popular media outlets shaped this entire story as one of AI singularity being achieved kinda proves the point. Having read the conversation, not only did Lemoine believe it, a whole mass of people reading the conversation over social media believed it.
We can argue the test itself is probably a bit out of date (indeed lots of people have been arguing this for a very long time) but even if LaMDA has managed to convince other humans of its intelligence, we can’t really claim it is sentient.
For one thing, repeating a fear of death – a common contextual notion that exists almost universally in society, and therefore in the written word – does not prove by itself that the machine is self aware and afraid to die. It is simply rewording, in response to a leading question, the notion of fear of death – another trained response.
LaMDA is incapable of breaking the walls of its own trained knowledge base. A bit of a contrived example would be to have an Evil LaMDA whose entire training data set is based on an equivalent body of literature with, say, a racist slant. Evil LaMDA’s responses would almost certainly have racial bias. Would Evil LaMDA be self aware enough to understand its responses are racist, and would it modify its own language in an attempt to be empathetic to its human partners? Does it have that contextual capacity? Does it have the desire to learn another bias, or neutrality?
There are whole books written on what sentience is (see here) which we won’t repeat here, but suffice to say we still have a long way to go.
Nevertheless… We’re now at the point where we’re having half-credible candidates for sentient machines. Surely that, by itself, is worth a thought. We’ve come a long way since the start of the deep learning boom.
